Auto Safety: Road Trips, Errands & Trail Days

With more people out on rural roads, a little awareness goes a long way.
With more people out on rural roads, a little awareness goes a long way.

With more people out and about, a little extra awareness goes a long way. Here are some tips to keep you safe on the road this season.

1. Watch for Increased Traffic and Distractions

Spring Break brings more drivers, bikes, and pedestrians, especially around trailheads and downtown areas. Stay alert, slow down in busy zones, and assume others may not be paying attention.

2. Don’t Leave Valuables in Your Car

Trail parking lots and public areas can be easy targets for theft. If you’re mountain biking or walking, take valuables with you or lock them out of sight.

3. Be Mindful of Bikes on the Road

This is peak season for cyclists. Give at least 3 feet of space when passing and double-check before turning or opening your door.

4. Avoid the “Quick Errand” Risk

A lot of accidents happen close to home. Even if you’re just running to grab coffee, stay focused. Spring Break activities can throw off your normal driving habits and routes.

5. Check Your Coverage Before You Travel

If you’re heading out of town, make sure you understand your deductible, roadside assistance, and rental coverage before you need it.

Home Safety: When You’re Traveling (or Just Busy)

Remember to lock up before a trip.

Whether you’re gone for a week or just spending more time outside, your home still needs attention. Here are some essential tips to keep your home safe.

1. Make Your Home Look Lived-In

If you’re traveling, use timers for lights, pause mail delivery, or ask a neighbor to keep an eye out. Empty driveways and overflowing mailboxes are easy signals that no one is home.

2. Lock Up Every Time

Warmer weather means more open windows and quick trips outside. Don’t forget to lock doors and windows, even if you’re just gone for a short walk.

3. Watch for Spring Storms

Spring in Northwest Arkansas can bring sudden storms. Secure outdoor furniture, trampolines, and anything that could turn into a projectile in high winds.

4. Check Your Gutters and Drainage

With spring rain, clogged gutters can lead to water damage fast. A quick check now can prevent a costly claim later.

5. Be Cautious with Fire Pits and Grills

Cool evenings make fire pits tempting—but always keep them a safe distance from your home and fully extinguish before heading inside.

Bonus: Outdoor Safety Matters Too

With trails calling your name, don’t forget these important safety tips:

  • Wear a helmet (yes, even for quick rides).

  • Stay hydrated. Spring sun can sneak up on you.

  • Let someone know where you’re going if you’re heading out solo.
